BETTER PLANNING: Coimbatore LPA committee has been reconstituted. –
With the Government reconstituting the Coimbatore Local Planning Authority (LPA) recently, the authority now has a seven-member committee. The District Collector, V. Palanikumar, is the chairman of the committee.
The panel met on May 2 and discussed about 50 proposals that were placed before it. According to the Member Secretary of the authority, G. Manikavasagam Pillai, the committee's opinion will be taken and its resolution is required for policy matters such as change of land use and variation in development plan.
The advisory committee was vacant for over five years and has been reconstituted this year. "We plan to meet every month now," he says.
Mr. Pillai explained that the local body can approve building plans for single dwelling of maximum 200 sq.mt. built up area (ground plus first floor) and commercial buildings of 100 sq.mt. If the area exceeds this limit, then the plan is referred to the Local Planning Authority. The authority has powers to approve four units dwelling of any area, commercial building (only ground plus first floor) of any area, industrial or institution buildings (ground plus first floor) of any area and layouts of five acres or less. The rest is referred to the Commissioner of Town and Country Planning, Chennai.
Secretary of the Coimbatore Consumer Cause, K. Kathirmathiyon, said the committee should now focus on development of the city.
