Tryst with thuthi

It needs sunlight and can be grown both on ground or on pots in the balcony, writes Hema Vijay

Claim to fame:The plant’s leaves can be cooked and eaten and is a good medicine for piles. It has many other uses and is an important component of Siddha medicine.

For a plant that grows to reach just about six feet, the Thuthi plant holds a tall claim to fame.

Like spinach, the leaves of this plant may be cooked and eaten, and will relieve the symptoms of piles.

In fact, the plant has many other uses and is an important component of many Siddha medicines.

And the best part is, Thuthi is an easy plant to grow and maintain.

Nurture

This plant needs its dose of sunlight. It can be grown both on ground in the garden, or in pots in the balcony. The soil mixture should ideally be a mixture of one part sand, one part red earth and one part manure.

This apart, just half a litre of water everyday is what it requires for sustenance.

The plant requires only an initial push, after which its propagation doesn’t require much effort. To begin with, you can grow the Thuthi plant from seeds or seedlings.

"When the plant grows to be about three months of age, you will notice the plant producing a huge number of seeds.

On falling into the soil, the seeds are capable of germinating into a fresh crop of Thuthi plants", informs S. Indrakumar, plant expert and president, Home Exnora.

The plant survives for about six months.
