Some 700 workers of a Bahrain contracting firm, including Indians, have gone on a strike demanding better pay packages.

The strike comes two days after India’s decision to put on hold a proposed measure fixing the minimum wage for its nationals taking up employment in Bahrain following resistance from employers and the government in the Gulf country.

Employees at Olympic Contracting Company, based at two labour camps in Salmabad and Arad, downed tools in support of their demand for hike in salaries.

“We have decided to stop going to work until we get a pay hike,” a worker told Gulf Daily News.

Company officials visited the Salmabad camp, where 600 workers are housed, yesterday morning and tried to negotiate with them after they failed to turn up for work.

The Indian Embassy has been informed about the recent developments, a worker said.

However, an official of the Embassy denied having received anything in writing.

Meanwhile, workers of another contracting firm at a labour camp in Malkiya refused to go to work demanding better pay but were persuaded by company officials to withdraw the strike after a few hours.

Previously, India had asked unskilled workers leaving India to first produce contracts stipulating a specified minimum wage, which it would set in line with the cost of living in the host country. - PTI

IT parks

The establishment of Information Technology parks in tier-II cities like Tiruchirapalli and Tirunelveli is being expedited, according to official sources here.

The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has notified the 49.89 hectare area at Navalpattu on the outskirts of the city as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for IT and IT-enabled services in the Gazette of India, the sources said.

The SEZ project is being implemented by ELCOT. The IT park at Gagaikondan near Tirunelveli is also taking shape fast. The IT park has already arranged for water supply from Thamirabarani river. An electric substation has also been installed, they said.

Top companies like HCL, Sutherland, IBM, Infosys, TCS and Bosch hav evinced interest in setting up units in these parks, they added. - PTI
