South-west entrance
Question: I have a house built on a 40 x 50 site in Hegde Nagar. My gate and entrance face the south-west, which people say is very bad. My backyard door faces the north. We have more open space near the gate than in the north-east. Can I do some corrections with feng shui to ward off total negativity? I have been having problems of several kinds, both health and financial. My kitchen is in the north-east. I have an entrance foyer too facing the south-west.
Nivedita Bhat, Hegde Nagar
Our panellist, Dr. Niranjan Babu, Vaasthu expert, answers:
Placing basil and other herbal plants near the rooms which people with ill health use can considerably contribute to better health. As a general vaasthu rule clean up the north-east of the site, the house and the respective rooms. The planetary lord Jupiter of this area, who is a significator of wealth, can perhaps stabilise your finances.
Main points
Question: Can you tell me about 10 points that make vaasthu a science for a house that has to be followed? It is not the question of non-belief, but a raring to know whatever goes into a science that says so much about directions. My house on the north side is south to my immediate neighbour, just a few feet away. How do we corroborate all this?
Shanthi Swaroop, Indiranagar
Dr. Niranjan Babu answers:
Over the last decade, we have been seeing the rising importance of vaasthu not only in India but also all over the world. People have begun to experience the beneficial results of properly applied principles of the science. At the same time people have begun to ask about the scientific basis of vaasthu. It is based on the energies emanating from various cosmic bodies all over the universe. These energies could be physical energies like gravitational, solar, magnetic, thermal, electrical, mechanical and many metaphysical energies that are still unknown (to modern science). When we say that disturbance of Brahmastana (the centre of a site or house) causes disharmony and consequent misunderstanding among the family members (or employees, if it is a business house) we speak of gravitational energies. Head positions when sleeping to certain directions bring in the importance of magnetic and thermal energies. Recommending areas for prayer rooms and cooking areas bring into consideration the solar energies. Lightning rods placed on the temple top indicate the application of electrical energies. The principles of vaasthu, irrespective of whether it is a science or not, when applied properly do contribute to better health and happiness.
Ancestral property
Question: With respect to a Hindu male or female, kindly explain the actual legal position as to what constitutes ancestral property and what constitutes self-acquired property.
Our panellists, N.C.S. Raghavan and Arvind Raghavan, legal experts, answer:
Any property acquired by a male Hindu as a member or coparcener of Hindu Joint Family as his share in the Joint Family property constitutes an ancestral property in his hands. He could acquire the right by means of an intestate succession (succession when there is no will) on the death of his father if the property was held by his father as ancestral property in his hands at the time of his death.
He could acquire the right in a partition in a Hindu Joint Family of which he is a member. In both these cases the property acquired by him is ancestral in character. Such an ancestral property in his hands becomes a nucleus to become a property of a Hindu Joint Family consisting of himself, his wife, sons and daughters.
On the other hand, when a Hindu male acquires a property in an intestate succession (when there is no will) as a heir from his father or mother who have held the property as their self-acquired property, then, the property so acquired by him is self-acquired property in his hands. Similarly any property acquired by him as a legatee / beneficiary under a will also become his self-acquired property.
In the case of a Hindu female, the position is very simple and clear. In whatever manner she acquires a property as a heir, as a legatee / beneficiary under a will or in a partition of a Hindu Joint Family, the property she gets becomes her self-acquired property i.e., known as her “Stridhana” property.
In respect of a self-acquired property, both in the hands of a Hindu male or female, the property becomes absolute in their individual hands and each of them can deal with the property in any manner whatsoever without any restrictions, in respect of ownership, possession, power of disposal of the same or any part of it through sale, mortgage, lease, easement, licence etc., or through a will.
On the other hand, an ancestral property in the hands of a Hindu male becomes a property of a Hindu Joint Family governed by the rights of all members of the joint family including himself. His right of disposal is confined only to his share in the Hindu Joint Family.
The above can be explained by the following illustrations:
A, a Hindu male aged about 75 years, has two sons, B and C, and a daughter D, aged 50, 47 and 45 years respectively. B has two sons B1 and B2, C has a son C1 and D is a married daughter with children. “A” has an ancestral property, i.e., a vacant land of about 20,000 sq.ft., apart from movables and is the Kartha of the Joint Family.
After the recent amendments to the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, even a daughter (married or unmarried) becomes a full coparcener of a Hindu Joint Family having equal rights like the sons. Hence, in this example the shares in the joint family will be for A – 1/4th, B – 1/4th, C – 1/4th and D – 1/4th respectively.
In the above case, B dies leaving his two sons B1 and B2 i.e., grandsons of A. As B’s share in the Joint Family property is in the nature of ancestral property, B1 and B2 become members of the Joint Family sharing equally their father’s 1/4th share. These shares constitute ancestral property in their respective hands. In the above case, if B had any self-acquired property acquired by him from his own funds, the shares of B1 and B2 as heirs in the same are only self-acquired property in their respective hands.
