Something good is cooking for Indian kitchens, hopefully. After a barrage of the foreign companies coming over to take advantage of the booming modular kitchen market in India, the Indian companies too don’t want to be left behind. The advantage for the Indian companies is in the pricing though. Take TTK Prestige Limited, for instance. In the market for the sixth decade now, and awarded the ‘Superbrand’ status for its Prestige brand, the company is all set to explore the nook and corner of the kitchen and tackle the kitchen space for home improvement.
The week saw TTK Prestige launch its modular ‘Kitchen Boutique’ in hometown Bangalore, the company’s second retail venture after the Prestige Smart Kitchen outlets. The endeavour is an exclusive retail initiative that showcases a gamut of designer modular kitchens in a variety suitable to the pockets of both the economy class and the rich with quality features. TTK’s 180 Smart Kitchen outlets with kitchen appliances are already running in 110 cities across the country.
For booming salaries
Says T.T. Jagannathan, Chairman, TTK Group, “In a country where the environment is friendly, with IT salaries filling up the young graduate’s pockets, the ever busy professional faces a time crunch and isn’t going to run to a carpenter. One has to visualise the growing economy and take advantage of the situation. This is the right time to help professionals with choices and since we are old chefs conversant with the kitchen space, we ventured into hard core space-build with our modulars. After all, weren’t we the pioneers of pressure cookers and split-level duplex gas stoves?”
“Retail is the hottest sector and this is another platform to showcase our product portfolio,” said S. Ravichandran, MD, TTK Prestige.
Chandru Kalro, Executive Vice-President, TTK, said, “Our offer would suit the Indian sensibilities in the kitchen more and that is what we are trying to address.”
The real estate boom is another factor influencing the kitchen makeover industry. Says Jagannathan, “Most people travelling are getting influenced by international trends. Modular is a norm, with kitchens getting increasingly open, and the space getting smaller. This is where modulars come into the picture for tackling space and aesthetics for a great flaunt. So we think just like tailors, one can expect carpenters also to dwindle.”
Add officials of TTK, “A Prestige survey regarding people’s needs before the launch of the modular boutique revealed that people welcomed the company in modulars as it had experience in handling kitchens and had brands that were long standing. We have 150 orders for modular units already, even before the launch,” they said.
Apart from this, options in electro-domestics and the availability of a complete back-end of carpenters, electricians and masons readily are factors that may go in their favour for convenience.
Choices galore
* 1000 options in material, finish and colour are available. The choices are for every pocket starting from Rs. 1 lakh.
* In Jacaranda pre-laminated melamine finish, the shutters and the body can be either made from Medium Density Fibre or boiling water-resistant ply that is tough. You can go for four-side bent shutters or the soap-edged variety with 25 shades of laminates available.
* If you love solid wood, the Magnolia range has shutters framed with rubber wood and the body is made from MDF.
* The Iris range has designer finish with membrane foil that is scratch-proof too. Want premier lacquer? Choose Daffodil which has in-built handle.
* The accessories range from shaft-mounted D-tray, s-hooks, bottle pullouts and multi-purpose trays in different shapes to pull-out spice, cutlery and vegetable racks and a host of hobs and kitchen hoods.
With ‘practical pricing’ being its mantra, TTK hopes to capture a sizeable portion in a market that has demands for 80 million modular units a year, even as we see the skyline going higher and higher.
After all, TTK has boldly ventured into premium kitchen space after a boxed product that whistled its way to glory.
