The real estate sector in our country is essentially unorganised and viewed with a lot of suspicion, due to lack of transparency. Realty transactions are complicated, courtesy red-tapism. Most global investors saw a high level of anarchy as the insignia of the real estate sector till a few years ago.
“Not any more” says Mr. Lakshmi Narayanan, President and CEO of Bangalore-based Real Estate Bank International Ltd., (REBI). He told a press conference in Chennai recently that REBI has been offering all services under one roof for both buyers and sellers. Recently it expanded operations in Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. There are nearly 14,000 real estate brokers in Bangalore, 8,800 in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, 18,000 in Chennai, 27,000 in Mumbai and 120,000 in Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon.
REBI is at work to announce a national toll-free telephone number as helpline for real estate stakeholders. There are also plans to launch two real estate portals - www.locateurproperty.com and www.bharatpropertymarket.com

Sirsa, a CFL district
Sirsa in Haryana has achieved the distinction of becoming the first district in the country to totally switch over to the use of compact fluroscent light (CFL), thereby saving 60MW of electricity and effecting a saving of Rs. 9 crore a month on the bills of consumers.
The task of replacement of all electricity-guzzling incandescent bulbs with CFLs had started in May last year and was completed in four months.
Over 100 teams of power sector employees, led by their General Manager D.S. Malhan, visited each consumer thrice to persuade him/her to use CFLs in place of the traditional yellow bulbs.
Power department officials in the area declared the district a cent per cent CFL district on Wednesday, except for tube wells and workshops.
Over eight lakh compact fluorescent lamps are in use on the premises of 1.75 lakh consumers.
