Alcohol and stress relief

August 31, 2014 12:17 am | Updated 12:17 am IST

“After a hard days stress and toil

Human stress-spring

needs uncoil”

A drink or two was

perfect, he thought

To drown his worries,

to loosen his knot

The style, the glam,

the clink of glass

Made him feel apart,

a different class.

Soothing down or cheering up

Alcohol to celebrate every triumph

Moving slowly from bar to home

Alcohol stalked him to his bedroom

A casual fling, ‘just a small’

Became a habit to daily enthrall.

Liver cells are clever, when good

Challenge them with

any type of food

Milk or bread or chicken shred

They reliably give you

back energy instead

Alcohol, slowly make them sick

The cells would swell,

fibrose and stick

The beautiful hexagon

hepatic cells

Turn into a mass of grey-hard-gel

As he downs the last

drink of the day,

Cirrhosis Liver had come to stay

Some more years

and many more pegs

Brings yellow eyes and

swollen legs

By then the damage

is already done

System failure has set

in one by one Gone are the style,

the glam and clink

No friends to cheer, no on-the-rocks drink

I wonder, as I see him huddled in bed number three

Effect of a curse, that promised him life stress-free.
