What is Attachment theory in Psychology

March 16, 2018 12:15 am | Updated 12:15 am IST

This refers to a theory in developmental psychology which states that children require strong physical and emotional attachment to an adult as they grow up in order to be able to develop the various capacities essential to their well being. Usually, attachment to a parent gives children the necessary safety and security to deal with various threats as they grow up. Attachment theory was first proposed by British psychologist John Bowlby in his 1958 paper “The nature of the child’s tie to his mother”. Attachment is viewed by some as an evolutionary trait that helps species tackle various life threats.
