The book in my hand

A weekly column on what well-known personalities are reading and planning to read.

This week, it is Jay Panda and Srinath Raghavan.

Jay Panda

The last four books I have read are: Magna Carta: The Birth of Liberty by Dan Jones, Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now by Ayaan Hirsi Ali , How Rome Fell: Death of a Superpower by Adrian Goldsworthy, and The Bed of Procrustes: Philosophical and Practical Aphorisms by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.

Jay Panda, of the Biju Janata Dal, is a member of the Lok Sabha.

Srinath Raghavan

I have just finished Anubha Bhonsle’s Mother, Where's My Country? It is an excellent, grim account of how the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act is hollowing out democracy in places like Manipur. The next book I intend to read is Timothy Nunan’s superbly researched Humanitarian Intervention: Global Development in Cold War Afghanistan.

Srinath Raghavan is a Senior Fellow at Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi. His book, ' India's War: The Making of Modern South Asia, 1939-45' , will be published soon.
