At a high-level meeting at the United Nations General Assembly, on the subject of ending AIDS, Member States adopted a new declaration. Thye have pledged to follow time-bound targets to fast-track the pace of progress towards ending HIV and AIDS as a public health threat in the next five years, and ending the epidemic by 2030. In his remarks, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “Over the next five years, we have a window of opportunity to radically change the trajectory of the epidemic and put an end to AIDS forever... Despite remarkable progress, if we do not act, there is a danger the epidemic will rebound in low- and middle-income countries. The future of people with HIV/AIDS, many of whom are children and among the most vulnerable, must be central to every decision.” Picture shows an AIDS awareness campaign in Chandigarh.
