In opening the proceedings of the evening Professor Vyasa Row pointed out the necessity for the teachers to push themselves forward and show their self-respect and independence when others encroach upon their field. He then laid stress on the need for a separate university for Trichy and among other things he pointed out that while Great Britain possessing the same area and population boasted of 19 Universities, the Madras Presidency after 150 years of British Rule claimed only 1 University. Trichinopoly both with reference to student population, the existence of 2 First Grade Colleges, a number of high schools, its geographical position, climatic conditions and its historical importance was preeminently fitted to have a University for the Tamilians when Andras and Malayalis had been agitating for their own. Of course the Kanarese people had realized their expectations in the founding of the Mysore University.
