In deciding to be the change it wants to see, Team Anna has a striking parallel in the Janata experiment which proved that a popular movement can quickly gain political credentials
Minutes after Anna Hazare and his team announced their decision to consider entering electoral politics, Union Minister Ambika Soni said this was evidence of the group having had a political agenda. Ms Soni’s statement, by implication, meant that only she and her kind had the right to contest elections and that the average Indian voter must restrict himself to choosing from among them. It is another matter that these were the same people who indicted Team Anna for undermining Parliament’s role in political democracy.
The fact is Anna Hazare and his close aides could have made this decision almost a year ago when they captured the imagination of a cross-section of the Indian people, including the urban middle class, in August 2011 and rattled the establishment.
The atmosphere then had striking similarities with that in northern India in November 1973, when Jayaprakash Narayan had galvanised the youth and the students against the ruling Congress. The then establishment, in a declaration from Narora, called him a conspirator and even accused JP of being a CIA agent. And after many instances when he and his fellow protesters were beaten in public and put in jail, JP finally declared that he would lead a political alternative to Indira Gandhi’s Congress in the ensuing elections.
Well, the Congress, after daring JP to prove his point in an election, developed cold feet and invoked Article 352 of the Constitution to postpone the polls. The general elections, due in March 1976 were not held. And when they were in March 1977, JP proved his point. To cut a long story short, there are striking parallels between then and the present, when Anna Hazare and his team have reluctantly agreed to take the plunge. If one is to choose between lobbying for change, putting pressure for change and trying to be the change, the most democratic option would be the last; to be the change and go to the people seeking their mandate. And when the decision was taken, it was an explicit statement that the two other options did not work.
Even those who agree that going to the people is the best option in a democracy harbour the fear that Anna Hazare will face the same fate as JP. The Janata alternative collapsed and Indira Gandhi returned with a thumping mandate in 1980. It is also true that Janata threw up leaders whose record on probity was as bad, if not worse, as those against whom JP had campaigned. The Janata Party ended up as a platform for those who had mastered the art of corruption and the BJP, founded out of the Janata’s rubble, was no exception.
But then, the Janata Party sprang not from the crucible of the anti-corruption crusade that JP launched or even the one that was conducted by the students in Gujarat. The experience of the Emergency mediated the phase between the anti-corruption movement and the birth of the party. The excesses of Indira Gandhi during the Emergency made heroes out of scoundrels. The Emergency prematurely released a certain kind of opposition leader and encouraged them to strike deals and thus did all that could be done to discredit the opposition. It is worth remembering that the Janata Party also consisted of a Jagjivan Ram and an H.N. Bahuguna, who were part of the notorious regime from day one and crossed over just when the elections were announced. The sequence of events involving Baba Ramdev and the midnight swoop were indeed similar to that game Indira Gandhi played 35 years ago.
With a sense of history, it is incorrect to blame JP for having glossed over these problems when he put the Janata Party together. The struggle for restoring political democracy had to be top of the agenda in March 1977. If JP had insisted on sticking to his priorities as they were before June 25, 1975, he would have been guilty of participating in the destruction of our republican Constitution. JP responded to the situation and presided over the process of cobbling a party together. The Janata Party was constituted in just 12 days between January 18, 1977 — the day Morarji Desai was released — and January 30, 1977, when the leaders announced their party. JP and his colleagues could not afford a longer time because Indira Gandhi’s strategy was to give the opposition as little time, fox them and ensure victory for herself in the elections.
There are lessons for Anna Hazare and his team from this. Team Anna has men and women who are eminently capable of seeing things. Notwithstanding the naive but earnest Kiran Bedi here or an Anupam Kher there, one would expect Shanti Bhushan, an active player in the making of the Janata Party, to play another big role. The elder Bhushan had, in a sense, been a catalysts in the making of the crisis then. He had argued Raj Narain’s case against Indira Gandhi’s election from Rae Bareili and the ensuing judgment had, in a sense, set the stage for the declaration of the Emergency.
And in the end, unlike some abstract notes that JP had put forth under the rubric of ‘Total Revolution’, Team Anna has propounded a concrete draft for an effective legislation against graft. Therein lies the hope. The nation can afford to take another chance even while staying prepared for another disappointment and another battle thereafter. This is better than putting up with the crop we have.

Can Team Anna promise tax payers an option to deposit their tax every year into a fixed bank account in their name (frozen for specific period) and withdraw the entire accumulation if and only if their Govt. fails verifiably to bring-back the black money stashed abroad, within that specific period?
“…Team Anna has propounded a concrete draft for an effective

A sane analysis in the media from an academician?! – alas, you are a
rarity in India today!
Thank you, The Hindu.
Janata Party Government led by Late Morarji Desai was toppled not by RSS/Jan Sangh (BJP was not in existence that time)but by the conspiracy of Late Indira Gandhi, who saw in weakness of Late Charan Sigh to fulfil the "life's ambition of becoming Prime Minister". The experiment of Late VP Singh was destroyed by VP Singh himself by introducing Mandal Commission report to check BJP.
Media coverage is needed to reach maximum people. But when somebody
sincerely attempt to do something good for the entire society the
message reaches them. In 1977 24x7 TV was not there. During Mr.
Seshan's advent also there was not extensive coverage in TV about him.
But still every one India knew about him and admired him. The so
called illiterate people are not devoid of any specific and important
knowledge affecting him. He demonstrates his knowledge only when the
occasion demands it. The arrogance of established political parties
will take a severe beating in the ensuing parliamentary elections.
The Hindu has covered the 2nd stage of Anna's fast movement quite well and published the articles of both the supporters and the critics of Anna. This particular article gives hopes that the decision of Anna to give a political alternative may be a success.
Given that all political parties have failed the country and its people, it is imperative that we
welcome new competition. There is no credible information to question the credentials and
the intentions of Anna and his associates. If a democracy repeatedly fails to throw up
leadership that means to, is capable of, and actually runs the country in the interests of the
public at large, it will eventually cease to be. The whole thesis of democracy is that the
process of elections results in leaders who run the government for the people. If that
assumption is false because the so called democracy is nothing more than a game of
elections, then we are all up the creek.
I really like the conclusion part of the article - "The nation can afford to take another chance even while staying prepared for another disappointment and another battle thereafter. This is better than putting up with the crop we have."
Hope for the best, while being prepared for the disappointment, better than being with the worst.
i just don't get it.why are some indians against this move of
Annaji? we ,all know how these politicians are acquiring a lot of
money but still we are against Annaji, who is simply asking for a
bill that can help to eliminate corruption or asking for an
inquiry against corrupted politicians(they have proofs against
them).i believe the time has come for annaji to start their long
journey of combating corruption.this is not going to be easy as
it requires a lot of money to campaign and a lot of Question to
answer and they also need support from print media as well as
electronic media to widespread their ideas.i think media and
citizens of india have a responsibility towards it and we can do
this by voting for the right person (not giving our votes for
just a beer bottle or some meager money) ....m with Annaji and u
should be because it's our india ........pls open your eyes..
A Request from a Student who wants to live in corruption free
india
Write a Phd thesis on this Anna movement if you like but please do
not forget a very simple fact. In today’s democracy one needs a lot
of money to fight and win an election. The financial supporters
quite correctly want a good return on the investment and this leads
to corruption. It is the same world over and India and Anna sahib
cannot be an exception. When Anna ji starts knocking at the door
for money they will have to compromise. Thanks
Mr Varghese,
What remark from Ambika are you trying to justify, Anna's team had political intentions from start?
Please help me understand what's wrong in Anna and his team having political ambitions, or per you only Nehru (phony Gandhi)family can have political ambitions?
Regarding, Manmohan having poilitcal compulsions to include DMK ministers also doesnt cut ice,as a PM he cant be looking other way when the country is being robbed. and FYI the coalscam happened under his own watchful eyes when he was a minister for that dept.
Regarding seeing many non-congress options at centre, are you talking about India or some other country? As we only had very few noncongress alternatives. you can judge for yourself if they were worse or better. per me atleast they didnt subvert constitution for their personal gains and abolish elected state governments at their whims and is important in democracy. Money for anna campaign came from small donations by people like me. great article Ananth.
What a nicely written article. Articulate, convincing (though of course am biased!!) and without random overtones. Also a request to "Hindu"- CAN YOU PLEASE start a newspaper in Mumbai, am tired of the trash which enters my drawing room every morning.
I don't think we can compare JP with Anna, or even emergency situation with the current situation. During the emergency even the doors of the supreme court were closed. Media was restricted and JP didn't have the support of media like Anna has now. Unlike Anna and his team, JP was a politically mature leader. Anna is suggesting home medicine for cancer(corruption). It is not going to work and it is a dangerous way because in the process it is also going to the destroy the patient's hope.
My full support to Team Anna. I see them as the only hope for good governance. May they win a few seats in the next parliament and prove to these corrupt politicians, that it is indeed possible to lead a decent life and still do real service to people through parliment while being absolutely corruption free.
We need leaders who can demonstrate by example.
But, if Modi is the prime ministerial candidate, I will vote for BJP.
My full support to a movement to liberate the nation from corrupts and criminals, who hold the nation ransom. If properly channelised, this movement can uproot many corrupt political parties forever including congress monarchy. It must be called peoples movement and not attaching to any individuals name. Of course, individuals will be there to run the movement.
Very well written article and comparison. It needs to be seen how team
Anna reaches the grass root level and convinces the common man to
break the shackles of mundane voting ritual and convince him of the
long term benefits of a corruption free government. His party has to
cut across regional, caste, linguistic, party, geographical barriers.
Its a mammoth task indeed. His task becomes even more difficult in the
view that the corporate sector, the business class which vies for
quick gains using money power, will be standing against him. I wish
team Anna all the best.
All should contribute whatever they can financially so that this anti corruption movement is properly organised without any financial constraint. I am doing it and request all to please doit in the national interest.
CORRUPTION - THE ROOT CAUSE OF ALL SOCIAL EVILS
Corruption is the root cause of all the evils in the society, such as poverty, difference between poor & rich, crimes, loots, injustice or delayed justice to the common man,
unemployment, unsafe life, illegal land acquisition, insecurity-feeling in women & girls, all types of scams etc. Corruption is like cancer in the society. There is hardly any part or section of the society which is not poisoned by corruption. So it has to be removed from the root in order to make the country happy, healthy, prosperous, safe, secure and progressing. It is very unfortunate that the very basic functions of the Government have to be reminded through ANSHANS or AANDOLANS.
"The top priority for the public is "Non-corrupt governance" because once corruption is controlled, other things will automatically improve." Yes it is the time to find a suitable, effective, for-the-people, honest, patriotic and full- of-nationalism alternative governance
which is possible through political power only.
Anshans and Aandolans can influence the sensitive systems only.
"Do or Die" needs optimum energy and stamina. For that, I think, hunger strike is not the solution, but it needs a clear, pure, strong and effective national strategy. So I personally feel that Anna Ji and Team, after ending the fast, should start gaining more and new energy.
I hope this strategy will take the nation out of the dirty mud and will get full public support.
It's right that Indian politics is the dirtiest, but it's also important to know who made it so. Secondly, now the people of India have understood this, so cleansing of politics is not so difficult. Remember that Jai Prakash Narayan changed the scene in few months only when Indira Gandhi imposed emergency. Be optimistic, everything will be stream lined.
Comparison between highly educated and experienced JP and an almost uneducated ex army driver is unfair. Before launching his Sampoorn Kranti movement he had written several books on his model of ideal democracy.During Bangladesh refugee influx Indira Gandhi dispatched him to various world capitals as her special emissary. In 1973 after the death of his wife Prabhadeviji he launched a weekly news paper Everyman's Weekly in which he had outlined his priorities under the Heading "First Things First".He had given a clarion call to the youth to come forward to save democracy in his issue of December 09,1973.This was before he entered into Gujarat movement which was initially launched by students of Gujarat Vidyapeeth by a protest against the then Education Minister Dr.Amulya Desai. But no such antecedents of Anna are available. His 'team' speaks in different voices. How he can be compared with JP?He has no plan to unite all anti-esteblishment forces nor guts to do so.
Unless the IAC/ Team Anna co-opts the RSS into its movement & conduct its politics around the RSS' political wing the BJP, it cannot create another "Janata Movement" like JP. It can @ best try to stay above relevance by making a few media appearances. It was the RSS that lent the mass to the JP movement, the fired-up or inspired youth only gave it voice, but not mass.
Interestingly many of these corrupt politicians such as Laloo Yadav, Mulayam Yadav, etc sprang from this movement. Of course there were certain good ones too like Nitish Kumar, Sushil Modi, etc. Also caste-ist & votebank politics achieved its dominance as a result of this movement. Many of the caste-ist leaders under the garb of Socialism carved out votebanks of their castes like Laloo & Mulayam (Yadav), Ram Vilas Paswan (Paswan), Beni Prasad Verma (Kurmi, Koeri), Chautalas & Charan Singh clan ( Jat), Jagjivan Ram (Dalit). The culmination of which was the Mandal Commission.
Such articles allows The Hindu stand tall among all Indian newspaper.
Very well done.

Perhaps you are right Arpan that the Facebook warriors have lost the interest in Anna's cause (and perhaps they need to think about their attention spans), but the issues that caused Team Anna formation have not yet been solved. They are providing us an alternative.
I dont know about you, but the Commonwealth games shame are still fresh in my mind.
Without Anna 's moral umrella the rest of the team will not be able to get support from electronic meadia.MOreover Anna's crowd gathering capabilties are yet to be tested beyond Maharashtra and Delhi. To that extent the non Anna movement will be less effective for a short term results(before 2014 ).
"Union Minister Ambika Soni said this was evidence of the group having had a political agenda. Ms Soni’s statement, by implication, meant that only she and her kind had the right to contest elections and that the average Indian voter must restrict himself to choosing from among them"
Thank you very much for making this point clear..and here i was thinking that the reason for this statement was the fact that until the announcement of their "political alternative", the so-called Team Anna had always reiterated that they had no political ambitions
Ambika Soni's statement is a representative of all the current politicians. Yesterday, I watched Renuka Chaudhury ridiculing Anna's fast. Her sarcasm and smiles were not in diplomatic taste. Politics is a genuine profession and is not a prerogative of few. The current politicians have made this profession corrupt. Gandhi is a politician too. But british rulers never ridiculed him.
No comparison between JP ana Anna, even though I endorse anna view.
I don’t want to associate word ‘Premature’ to this announcement, I
think this was well thought strategy and they had to do it fairly
quickly to garner the anti incumbency which arguably is at its peak
over past couple of decades.
The start of this fast with demand from government to induct its own
prime minister was unimaginable, moreover the fear of loosing Anna
himself as government trying to disassociate him from team (remember
the secret meeting with Khursheed) might have introduced a sense of
urgency. Nevertheless this will only strenthern our democratic
institution and voters will get more choices to choose from. It is to
be seen that if anti-corruption override other equations like cast,
religion and money.
It will test the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal who had never ventured
in this territory before, can he get his act together and bring people
with impeccable integrity, credible achievements into the play.
2014 election is like running 100 meter race, if you blink few times,

This is a truly inspiring article. It talks abt the possibility of
failure but also how it need not be the end of the world. We can always
get up and fight again...n again...n again...
If Anna's team fields a candidate in my constituency, I will make it a
point to travel n cast my vote. As Krishna Ananth has rightly pointed
out, "this is better than putting up with the crop we have"
this is right time. we need a political alternative. the elected people from all parties are the same old guys there for all their life time and they dont want to change their habits of corruption. People of India will welcome Anna's form, and as far as I can see, this is very well planned to get popularity. If Anna formed a party right in the begining, nothing could have happened. now everybody knows about his intentions, and support him. Way to go Anna ji.
First Congress said that the Anna Team should fight the elections first and then they should question the politicians. Now when they have decided to jump into the electoral foray congress is now saying they real motive is clear now. They always wanted to be in politics.
There has been very negativity by the people. The contest of elections by team Anna gives the common people the chance to make their power felt. If Anna team anna fields some honest candidates then people should vote for them. It's a big opportunity for the middle class who have somehow been reluctant to participate in the electoral process in the name of absence of the hones candidates. It's opportunity for them to really make a change. Ball is now in the common man's court.
Excellent, insightful and refined analysis of the situation in the
country, when entire media seems to obsessed with sudden change in Team
Anna stance and not seeing the forest for its trees.
very well written article..very balanced and unbiased..
Team anna, if not Anna himself' knows very well that in this coalition era, a political party do not need more than 20-30 odd MPs to taste power and call shots at Centre. By offering 'magical / impractical ' solutions to problems like corruption / Black money etc, they feel the common man will easily give them at least these many seats. I will not be surprised if we find some of the Team Anna members taking up ministerial posts after 2014 election, in the Government headed either by Cong or BJP.
VK Ananth has put right use of his pen power.. otherwise largely our media is a hopeless case. Thanks
In a democracy such as India it is vital to "be the change you want to see" and this article echoes the sentiment beautifully! No amount of pressurizing is going to work against these inscrupulous politicians. At the same time it is not the democratic institution that is corrupt but its the people who make up this democratic forum that are to be spited.Hence it is important today that we have reperesentatives who are ready to take up the resposibility of making this country the "Super-power" that it truely deserves to be! And for this dream to be a reality team Anna has to take the plunge into active politics!
i suggest annas party be named bharat mata party -bmp-in hindi and -peoples partyof india -in english or the new india party. NIP for short
at the moment annas support is only in hindi speaking areas .to be an allindia party you need branches all over india .people who can speak the local tongue and explain the new partys ideas should be recruited.adeqate publity thru the new partys own tv channel is essential.candidates who are currrent mla or mps shoul;d be excluded from the partys consideration as nominees for election.--all the above need subsantial fund raising which should start now.there should be no alliance with any national or state party as all of them are corrupt.village.town.district and allindia organisational set up of the new india party should start now.there should also be different levels of leaders ready to sacrifice personal comforts forthe party.leadership should be ateamwork without depending on single person
A very positive article. Still there is some ray of hope in this corruption torn country. Way to go Anna and his team. We are with you.
My suggestion to Mr Anna Hazare,In the elections pls choose a constituency from where Mrs Gandhi is looking to stand.
And similarly the other prominent leaders of IAC,shall stand against the prominent leaders of congress and let the game begain.
Highly amusing article. While JP movement had grassroots level support and organization Anna movement is a movement of facebook and twitter warriors. It is already apparent that those facebook warriors have lost the interest in Anna cause and have moved on while Anna and his team are yet to realize this. Please don't insult the memory and significance of JP movement by comparing the Anna fiasco with it. It is same as calling Modi a reincarnation of Mahatma Gandhi.
My exact thought when I reak Ambika Soni's comments. Does she mean to say that fighting elections are a soul right of the congress party (well, the Gandhi family)?
Please, allow us, the people to atleast commit a mistake (if mistake it is, to choose Anna Hazare). We are tired of not being dealt with a choice! This is afterall a DEMOCRACY!
The Anna movement has striking similarity to not only the JP movement,
but also to the VP movement (or Bofors movement started by VP Singh).
There is fundamental difference, however. Both the historic movement
were infiltrated by the RSS/BJP cadre. After winning the election,
RSS/BJP elements withdrew support within 3 years and Congress returned
to power. Like the Muslim brotherhood of Egypt used by the Hosni
Mubarak, Congress and RSS/BJP have used each other to share the power
among themselves. Its time the nation should wake up and take the best
decision.
The article is very perceptive. Kudos to the write for his prescience. One significant difference between JP and Anna movement is that JP didnot have the luxury of time to form a party accoording to his vision where Anna has no such constraints except his Team's impatience and impulsiveness. It was rather amusingly intruiging to see the use of adjective 'naive' for Ms Kiran Bedi.Could the writer elaborate on that? She is having a 'child-like' quickness in her responses which is unnerving and startling sometimes, but 'naive'-she is not.Her apparent gullibility is generated out of a deep sense of fair play and abiding faith in democratic norms.Again thanks to the writer for a very apt and helpful comparison.
Very good article indeed. Few points i would like to mention:
1. Why we are so fearfull of new change in Indian political/governance?
2. Why can't a group of honest people be given a change to run this country?
3. the current system has failed on all fronts that why we need a change?
4. Can we name any department/project which is running 100% effeciently?
Anybody with a modicum of commonsense could make out the political
agenda behind team Anna's anti corruption movement. That is all Ambica
Soni stated.Twisting her statement to mean the she considers only she
and her kind had the right to contest elections and average ones have
to choose from them is author's fertile imagination. Moreover team
Anna will only cut into the anti Congress votes and so the news of
their joining electoral fray could only be music to the ears of
Congress leaders.Who according to the author are the men and women in
team Anna who are eminently capable of seeing things? Is it Arvind
Kejriwal who is at his vitriolic best when it comes to deriding
Congress leaders .Or is it Kiran body who thought nothing of
travelling in economy class and charge business class fare to the
NGOs.Victory of Janatha party in 1977 is the result of right wing
forces joining imam of Jama Masjid and using excesses in the family
planning programme to appeal to people's crude passions.
What is wrong with Ambika soni's remarks? Politicians and politics have compulsions. Especially, when a single party do not have the simple majority to rule. Has everyone forgotten Manmohan singh's relucatance to take some DMK nominees as central ministers, who later became a liability to the UPA govt, and the punching bag for the critics of UPA? What made him accept them inspite of his initial reluctance? Simply that he didnt have majority without the support of DMK. Hazare group's declarations are good; but let them contest and win from Tamilnadu, for eg, dislodging both the regional parties? Will they compromise on their ideals? Or, will they go it alone even if they were to win no seats? Similar are the many compulsions Ms.Soni might be speaking. Some readers are just ANTI-Congress, dreaming that once Congress is out of power, everthing will be perfect. Haven't we seen enough of non-Congress govts in Centre and in states? For Hazare's struggles, where did all the money come from?
Excellent and brave article. While the media is running scared and
finding faults with Team Anna, we need these kind of opinions. Anna and
Kejriwal were left with no choice but to participate in politics. There
is only one way to change behaviour of current politicians - make them
afraid of loosing their power. Some of the big name politicians like
Kapil Sibal, Manish Tiwari, Chidambaram, etc. need to loose their seats.
Sir,
There is one fundamental flaw in your analysis. At the time of JP
Movement, there was no strong opposition parties or regional parties.
Now, at present, there are large number of parties and the present
government is only a coalition government and next government would also
be a coalition government.Having ruled for 10 years, UPA is likely to be
replaced in any case. Comparing Anna with JP is great injustice.
Really like 'The Hindu' who unlike other news papers don't write thrash. I really want these people to come into power and change the way democracy is working currently...but at the same time I worry about Congress dirty tactics...Guys if Team Anna and it's political party fails to provide then they will be treated as another party, but we should atleast give them a chance..they really deserve it...and more or like they are working hard to finalizing answers for every question one can ask to a political party and also they are in continuous touch with lots of eminent people in this country...instead of criticizing them please send your suggestions for them to effectively form a party and come up with there manifesto....this will help you, me and every single citizen....
My hope is that the IAC group identifies few constituencies where it
steps in to make an otherwise unlikely but good independent candidate
win, and makes most of these famous ministers bite the dust. That
should be the focus of their 'political force' right now rather than
putting up candidates all over the country like a full political party.
In a democracy , its pathetic that , the elected reps do not seem to understand that they are the voice of the people who have elected them. If the people want change , it must be conveyed and taken up , not ignored. To think that we are elected and are capable of doing what we think is right is foolhardy and not representative of true democratic values. Team Anna have provided umpteem options and chances for talks but all have fallen on deaf ears. Time to join the game....instead of being the spectator. All the best !!!
Now Anna-hazare and team should be careful in organizing the followers in their
team. first time all seems honest and loyal but intruding the corrupt ones is the problem. who declares that volunatarly that he would do service selflessly without gains or sincerly for the public should be the candidates. there are so many gentlemen who are honest and uplift the poor by their service. they have to
select in each place such members.this is the only way to eradicate corruption from day to day affair. if the above is honest and strict in implementing the fair
policies of the government, middle men cannot take advantage and loot the money
thus sanctioned to the projects or departments.
Very clear analysis and examples showing resemblances between the JP
and Anna's movement. Hope Anna will be able to change the state of our
Nation.
Very nice analysis, the conclusion is that you cannot take people for ride. Congress should realized that it is no longer monarchy and people will take action if the do not perform, especially if their leaders can not act for the benefit of nation, but to please Gandhi family.
It is good analysis which is also pro-active for change. For once the author has not branded the movement as an 'yet another' or slighted the movement's forced decision to enter electoral frey. It is an undisputable fact that the movement has brought a large number arm-chair activists to the streets, who,so-long remained as just anguished commentators. They have now found a forum that will listen and act to highlight the all pervading menace of corruption they have to put-up with all these years. Now there is a chance to effectively control corruption in public sphere, ofcouse with the help of vigilant media and concerned citizens. Possibility of electoral reforms to keep the corrupt out of politics does certainly look good.
first article in any newspaper that anylised past and present agitation
so beautifully and neatly. Really great article
thumps up to "the hindu"once again.
Unlike many articles published in the news paper recent times, the
article by Dr Krishna Ananth is well grounded in history and gives a
sense of direction and depth. Unfortunately the lazy elite
intellectual class, who don't want to go deeper into history, became
too much power centric and find convenient to criticise any change.
Unlike them, the article by Dr. Ananth makes lots of sense as it gives
space to the popular movement by Anna-who initiated lots of positive
changes at the grassroot level (democracy from the bottom).
Why the political parties which compelled Anna to enter into politics
now question his intention? This question also equally apply to the so
called elites in Media. Wake up and see how the new world is
unfolding!
for annaji to succeed ,the following steps should be considered.
without media support particularly tv anna will not reach the entire country.at present it is only supported in the hindi belt.start a tv channel for publicising your views without delay fundraising is anothr issue .any party needs money to organise meetings, advertise viewpoints and sponsor candidates for election.president obama collected large amount of cash from commonpeople by a clever use of internet. Asking supporters to contribute just us $10 .a mass fundraising campaign by annaji asking all who supporthis priciples to contribute rs 100 to the party funds will work wonders.,assuming 100 percent honesty prevails in the party. To fight the money mustle of congress and bjp you must gather funds and organise mass meetings all over india.necessary branch units should be set up inall towns with population of one lakh.
no alliance with any party is to be made.as all existing parties, national and state level are corrupt
This a well written article , clearly articulating the points of discussion. I appriciate Hindu for not being biased as other media houses in India
Please do not insult Jayaprakash Narayan.
such hope... and nice analysis....
thanks for the timely piece...
A well balanced analysis far from the extreme ones which on one hand brands the whole Anna team as Rss agents and the other that categorises them as the left. The fact is that the movement has given voice to the concerns of the common man with daily corruption in their day to day living. It might have had largely the suppprt of middle classes but the issues they have raised deal with such things as getting a bpl card made,,,,,,more so denying the benefits of targeted schemes to unintended beneficiaries. Those who tend to neglect this aspect of the lokpal do all good to the corrupt. However it is another matter if the stated objectives would be achieved.Since both congress and bjp have ruling governments that are corrupt to the core and the left is still finding its feet,Anna team should be a welcome addition to the cast of Indian political drama.Only hoping that it doesnt get sidelined in a supporting role.
