The steeply declining sex ratio in India (Open Page, June 12) is a matter of great concern. A major cause for this is the sex determination test. It is very clear that we are a violent society that pursues violence right from the womb.

Why do we cry ourselves hoarse about regular acts of terror when parents have no qualms about getting rid of foetuses which would have been daughters? If we want to stem terrorism, let us begin the battle from home.

An economy can boom without women. It has very little to do with sex ratio. But the dangers that arise from a massive genocide created by an indiscriminate and wilful abortion of the female foetus will be very tragic.

Legislation can control this genocide only to a marginal extent. What we need is a nation-wide aggressive awareness campaign led by spiritual leaders and social activists.

An abortion, whether sex-selective or not, is an act of violence. Let us recall Mother Teresa who said: “Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use violence to get what they want.”
