World War & India

The article, “A European war, fought by India” (Aug. 5), on the country’s contribution to the First World War was informative and insightful. It is a pity that the younger generation knows little about it. The government should revise school textbooks to include information on the War. It will heighten the spirit of patriotism among students. As the author says, “the legacy of ignorance is a scandal.”

While the whole world marked the centenary of the First World War and paid rich tributes to soldiers who lost their lives, India did not commemorate the event. Many Indian soldiers died fighting, and many won the Victoria Cross. Besides the soldiers of the raj, soldiers of princely states also fought the war. Mysore Lancers, for instance, played a vital role during the Battle of Haifa.
