Why single out spitting?

July 22, 2016 01:02 am | Updated 01:02 am IST

Spitting, relieving ourselves in public and open defecation seem to be embedded in our DNA (‘Letters’, July 21). Paltry fines, never-enacted laws and a lack of public toilets may be reasons why this is excused but what is cause for concern is our callous attitude. Those of us living in the cities have become immune to the smells and sights resulting from such unsanitary activities. Awareness and an attitude makeover are equally crucial to creating better public spaces. Also, when women don’t go about making a mess, why do men?
