By advising Army Chief Deepak Kapoor to order court martial proceedings against Military Secretary Lieutenant General Avadesh Prakash for his alleged involvement in a land scam, Defence Minister A.K. Antony has reinforced that corruption at all levels will be dealt with firmly. There is bound to be some discord among some sections of the rank and file. This is only to be expected as major scams or dereliction of duty involving high-ranking officers and high-profile politicians have usually been swept under the carpet. Timely intervention by the Defence Minister — overruling the Army Chief’s decision to initiate disciplinary action against Lt. Gen. Prakash — was necessary.

The ordering of court martial proceedings against Military Secretary Avadesh Prakash for his alleged involvement in a land scam is welcome. In most cases, acts of corruption go unpunished or are subjected to negligible bashing. Gen. Kapoor’s decision will help reinforce discipline in the functioning of the army brass.

Mr. Antony deserves praise for advising court martial proceedings against Lt. Gen. Prakash. The move will go a long way in eliminating the general impression that the high and mighty can escape prosecution and punishment.
