The Gujarat High Court's order striking down the notification of the State government banning the publication, sale and distribution of Jaswant Singh's book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah has upheld the significance of the right to freedom of speech and expression under the Constitution. The Gujarat government and the BJP central committee should learn a lesson or two from the decision and put an end to their agenda of saffornising history. History is made up of facts, and facts presented by any means will be accepted by the people.

The High Court order is welcome. The Gujarat government acted in haste when it imposed the ban on Mr. Singh's book. The message to the Modi government is clear: "Don't judge a book by its cover." It is hoped that better sense will prevail on our leaders in future.
