The sentencing of the former Haryana Chief Minister, >Om Prakash Chautala, and his son to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for illegal selection of over 3,000 junior basic trained teachers is welcome. Looking at the scenes of unrest at the court complex in New Delhi, it is clear that such an unbiased decision wouldn’t have been possible in Haryana.

One hopes the punishment will reduce political and bureaucratic corruption in the country. People even believe that the father-son duo will cool their heels in jail for 10 years. But the fact is there is no precedent of anyone serving prison term for corruption. There are higher courts where the sentence can be appealed. Politicians will also ensure that their brethren are saved. Nothing untoward may really be in store for the Chautalas. The unruly scenes in the court complex, the statements of some leaders and Jat vote-bank politics — all point towards that.
