Welcome study

The Hindu has done well in analysing the nature of sexual crimes in Delhi cases over a period of time. What is clear is that the perpetrators of the crimes cut across all sections — from family members to boyfriends and neighbours.

The causes of sexual crimes are not far to seek. The imposition of the patriarchal order on the girl child; neglect by working parents; access to pornography; and portrayal of women as sex objects in the media. Lack of fear, low rate of convictions, and the protracted nature of legal procedures are some other reasons.

A victim will hate to talk about a sexual assault she undergoes. But an increase in research and publication of studies on the issue, as is being done by The Hindu , will go a long way in helping to curb crimes against women.
