While we appreciate the Kolkata Knight Riders for winning the IPL championship this year, the celebrations that followed in Kolkata — led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — were uncalled for. It was a club team that won the championship.

It is difficult to understand how the victory of a club team in a cricket tournament can be projected as a new facet of ‘paribartan.' The team has Kolkata in its name but it was coached by an Australian, captained by a Delhi-ite, is principally owned by a Mumbaite and, more notably, had only two players from Bengal.
