It is 63 years since we became a democratic republic. There ended the good news. We have continued to remain feudal at all levels. The result is that many laws have remained in the statute book. When the permanent executive implements them — as Durga Shakti Nagpal in U.P. and others mentioned in the article “Making India’s Durga Shaktis matter” (Aug. 8) did — the political class is offended. It victimises the implementers.
The root cause of this state of affairs is criminalisation of politics. People should discourage this trend. They should vote out the criminal elements. They should set an example by following the law to enhance their own moral authority.
