The report that veteran singer Manna Dey will be honoured with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award for 2007 is heartening. He is among the most deserving recipients of the prestigious award. One of the greatest playback singers, Dey ruled the film music scene from the 1950s to the 1970s. His numbers like Upar Gagan Vishal (Mashaal), Aaja Sanam and Ye Raat Bheegi Bheegi (Chori Chori), Aye Mere Pyare Watan (Kabuliwala), Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai (Seema), Laaga Chunri Mein Daag (Dil Hi To Hai), Chunri Sambhal Gori (Bahron Ke Sapne) and Ek Chatur Naar (Padosan) are evergreen hits.

Manna Dey, one of our musical legends, has been conferred the Phalke award quite late. He was the king of gazal and qawwali and most of his songs were rippled with melody and tempo. His songs were popular hits.
