It is heartening to note that women have secured the first two ranks in the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2010 (May 12). The myth that the civil services are a male bastion and the privilege of a few has been broken as more candidates from modest backgrounds are emerging successful. Meticulous planning, an attitude to stay the course with perseverance and patience are the key to cracking the examination.

The results show that given a chance, women can compete with men and excel in any field. One also hopes that in an era of scams and corruption, the new batch of civil servants will ensure a transparent and efficient administration with the courage to stand up and make their voices heard. A point which cannot be missed is the utility of The Hindu in contributing towards the success of UPSC aspirants, as one of this year's successful candidates has said.
