Three accidents in one State the same day (Jan. 2) have exposed the scant disregard government departments have for the safety of train passengers. It is a pity that no Railway Minister has ever made any attempt to improve our signal systems. Track modernisation is an immediate need. Hope the Minister will look into these issues rather than blaming the past mismanagement.

Soon after the first accident, senior railway officers should have realised the gravity of the situation and alerted other trains in the affected sector. Safety gets priority over punctuality in adverse climatic conditions. Before the details of the accidents are known, compensations are announced. Instead, why not reward zero-accident zones? Will that not save many lives?
