Unhealthy ritual

The news that on being shifted to Mizoram, Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan resigned is disturbing, although not unexpected (August 25). It has become a ritual for successive governments to remove Governors appointed by the previous regime. Had the BJP-led government allowed Governors appointed by the UPA to continue in office, it would have been hailed for not making the mistake committed by its predecessor.

All Governors appointed by the UPA government should have stepped down honourably soon after the BJP-led NDA came to power at the Centre.

It is an accepted practice that anyone who is asked to leave an office be given sufficient time. The manner in which he is asked to leave should also be dignified. Although the conduct of many Governors leaves much to be desired, the manner in which the BJP government has got rid of some of the Governors appointed by the UPA smacks of arrogance. Irrespective of who occupies it, the office of the Governor is an august one and should be respected.
