Unfolding tragedy

As reported in various media outlets, the operation of the “Buk missile system,” suspected to have been used to down Flight MH 17, requires highly trained military personnel. Therefore, the needle of suspicion points to Ukraine and Russia (July 21). Given the fact that Russia has dismissed the “so-called intercepts” of a conversation between a Russian military officer and separatist leaders who claimed they had shot down the plane, a thorough international probe is necessary. The U.N. should send an international team of experts to the crash site immediately. It is terrible that politics is being played over the lives.

It is unfortunate that a clash between two groups is responsible for the loss of 298 lives. When deadly weapons fall into the hands of extremist elements, the world has to suffer the consequences. It is frightening that even air routes are now insecure. World leaders must take note of conflicts in various regions and work towards amicable solutions.

The aircraft, and what remains of it, was an asset owned by the Malaysian company. Hence the black boxes should be handed over to the Malaysian government. If this is difficult, the rebels or Moscow should hand them over to some neutral state that has no stake in the outcome of the investigation and ensure a speedy and impartial probe. It is heart-rending to read about ordinary people going about their daily life being felled by those involved in politics. One only wishes that the probe is concluded expeditiously, the details are made public and the guilty punished.
