Pakistan has been on the boil for the past few weeks with supporters of the cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and the cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri upping the ante and defying public order. Clashes between the police and protesters trying to storm the residence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whose resignation they demand vociferously, have brought back fears of another military coup in Pakistan. With Mr. Sharif ruling out his resignation and protesters sticking to their demand, no pragmatic solution seems to be in sight. The turn of events in Pakistan shows that the country is still a fledgling democracy where the military remains all-powerful. It is hoped that better sense will prevail on the warring parties, ensuring that Pakistan does not slide back into chaos and anarchy.

The situation in Pakistan is explosive. It seems to be going out of control. The country is virtually under siege. One only hopes that the Army does not take over.
