This refers to the report >“Tipu’s ring to be auctioned” (May 13) . The auction is for May 22, ample time for the governments of Karnataka and India to ensure that the ring, said to have been seized by the British during the last War of Mysore in which the Tipu was killed, is brought back. The fact that “historical record shows Tipu as Catholic in his religious outlook and forward-looking in his world view” is a lesson for both secularists and Hindutva forces. The ring is a legacy of our ancient culture and tradition that have been practised by our great rulers of the past. It will be a source of great inspiration. Its price should not be the criteria and the government must activate diplomatic channels to reacquire the precious possession.
