Ties with Nepal

The ties India and Nepal share pre-date Independence on account of cultural similarities (“A new beginning with Nepal,” July 23). Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in particular share close links in culture, trade and education. It is unfortunate that the 1950 Treaty has now been eroded because of acrimony which has created great misunderstanding. India needs to set right ties with neighbouring countries, especially its geographically smaller friends.

The article was an eye-opener in detailing our extensive links. There is tremendous potential as far as improving existing ties with Nepal are concerned. With elements in the neighbourhood intent on stoking anti-India sentiments, New Delhi would do well to address the concerns of Nepal.
