Statements by the Congress about backing a third alternative after the results of the parliamentary election (“Congress talks ‘third alternative’ again,” April 28) are sure to backfire. Is the party indicating that it is losing the battle even before the conclusion of the remaining phases of polling? History has shown that such a formation cannot be stable and will not get to complete its term. The nation cannot afford political instability at this juncture. Instead, the Congress must be graceful and give Mr. Modi a chance.

Unfortunately, through its recent acts the BJP has again raised fears of being a communalist and divisive party. With the Left parties spearheading the formation of a third alternative, I am sure they will be happy to take the Congress on board, as ‘the enemy’s enemy is a friend’ to take on a common enemy!
