It is a matter of great pride that Mother Teresa’s iconic blue-bordered white cotton sari is now “an Intellectual Property of the Missionaries of Charity” (‘Life’ page, July 10). It is one of those images etched in one’s mind. It is said that on August 8, 1948, accompanied by Maggie, a junior teacher at St. Mary’s, Mother Teresa bought a pair of white saris with three blue stripes for herself for ₹2.50. She chose the blue as it symbolised purity. It is also said that it was similar to what female sweepers wore during that time in Calcutta.
