This refers to the editorial “Take a bow, Edward Snowden” (June 14). It can be argued that Mr. Snowden stood up for the right cause. But we seem to be overlooking the flip side of this rare show of bravado, and the precedent it sets for future whistleblowers. Mr. Snowden might have decided to expose what he thought was wrong but he did so by leaking sensitive information to the media. He broke the law meant to preserve national security and hence faces prosecution.
Further, as a thriving democracy we may disagree on where to draw the line between secrecy and transparency, especially in matters of national security but one thing we can’t afford to disagree on is: whose job is it to do the balancing act for us?
