The ignored engineer

September 23, 2017 12:09 am | Updated 12:09 am IST

Going by past experiences, “roof collapse” is common in the mining industry. To deal with this, geologists conduct studies on the strata and based on this, mining and tunnel engineers execute strata-controlling strategies. But in most cases, the burden is shifted to civil engineers who are less knowledgeable in this area than tunnel engineers and mining engineers.

The government should appoint mining and tunnel engineers before such projects are begun (Some editions, “Govt. sets up expert panel to study tunnel mishap”, September 22).
