The idea of India

R. Sudarshan speaks with a tone of “ >Lost Nehruvian Legacy ,” which I fear is turning out to be true (Nov.12). Nehru was in one of the most critical positions during a crucial period for independent India. He didn’t stick to the old mentality of other State Congress leaders. With self-confidence and in the spirit of experiment, he created an idea called “Make in India”. But this idea today is assumed to have been invented by Narendra Modi. Mr. Modi has not only scrapped the Planning Commission but he has also tried to abandon the idea of India. This is not the right time for a developing country like India to ignore the experience of the wise. The question is: will Nehru survive Modi?

The stalwarts of the freedom struggle, Nehru, Rajaji and Sardar Patel, often did not see eye-to-eye with one another, yet their different talents helped India to get off to a good start. Nehru stirred the imagination of the people. History and circumstances thrust upon Nehru the responsibility of guiding our nation, and he used his rapport with the people to lay the foundations for a strong and democratic India. He also established many a scientific institution because he understood the role and value of science for a developing nation. They also nurtured a large pool of talent.
