Tears over onions

Farmers often incur losses due to the fluctuating prices of onions (‘Ground Zero’ – “The bane of a bumper crop”, Sept. 17). A permanent solution lies in determining the MSP of onions. A policy should also be framed on the import and export of the bulb, keeping farmers’ interests in mind. The government should also develop a rapid market intervention mechanism for onions.

There are similar examples of the mismanagement of marketing for different types of agricultural produce. The lack of well-defined marketing norms and the absence of a proper distribution channel are main reasons. Value addition, processing, cold storage, warehousing and quick transportation can improve the situation.
