The article “Wake up and smell the coffee” (Open Page, Jan.29) is a forthright statement on the abysmal condition of rural Indian schools and the need for a complete overhaul of the system. The teachers in these schools often lose interest in the children because of the absence of daily monitoring of their activities. The children who can't afford the luxury of private tutors are left in the care of a few law-abiding teachers.
