Sections of the press have reported that Sunanda Pushkar claimed to have been suffering from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. And the autopsy has it that she was taking an anti-anxiety drug. Could she have been subject to delusions about an imagined affair between her husband and a Pakistani journalist? As a doctor who regularly sees Lupus patients, I know the ailment to be unpredictable. Her case must be examined with this in mind, and Dr. Shashi Tharoor must be left out of the mess.

Dr. P. Madan Mohan,

Thrissur

The untimely and unnatural death of Sunanda Pushkar comes as an inevitable consequence of high tensions among the affluent, who are part of diverse circles with complex equations. While Dr. Tharoor is entitled to enjoy wealth and stature in society, he should not hold a high-level government post. A person of his extravagant way of life cannot be vested with the right to enforce austerity on the common man whilst enjoying five-star accommodation while his home is being fumigated.
