Suburban rail travel

July 14, 2016 12:54 am | Updated 12:54 am IST

We take the suburban rail network for granted when it is clear that it is almost the backbone of the Indian Railways (“Fixing suburban rail travel”, July 13). Some time ago, while at the Vikhroli station in Mumbai, I saw a passenger fall off a suburban train (express service). He had tried to get off without realising that it was a limited stop service. The station master called for an ambulance and walked off. When I asked him why there was no attempt to help the injured man, he shrugged his shoulders and said that as it was a common occurrence, his duty was to just call for an ambulance. The man was lying on the tracks for about 35 minutes before help arrived. How will the Indian Railways become world class if this is the attitude?
