Gone are the days when the judicial acumen in the nation was so potent that Jawaharlal Nehru dismissed G.L. Nanda’s suggestion that an Indian Judicial Service be introduced in the civil services. Today, there has been a deterioration in all fields. The legal profession is filled with those who could find no place in any of the IITs or IIMs. This has led to frequent boycotts by advocates, confusion in the selection of judges, backlog of cases and a decline in public faith in the justice system. Perhaps, the government, parliamentary and judiciary should give some thought to Mr. Nanda’s recommendation.
