State of Parliament

It seems Parliament exists for disruptions and adjournments and not for any meaningful debate and an exchange of constructive ideas (“Opposition thwarts move to suspend MPS from A.P.,” Aug.23). “Cartoonscape” (Aug.22) summed up the situation aptly. Even with the general election not far away, people’s welfare lies at the bottom of the government’s agenda.

An MP from Andhra Pradesh whipping himself in Parliament is one of the saddest manifestations of our democracy that is already going haywire. One also has the situation where parliamentarians are quick to close ranks when it comes to demanding remuneration and other privileges. The Speaker should have disqualified the member for what is clearly a brazen violation of decency and decorum.

The continuous disruption of both Houses of Parliament is undermining our democracy. Disruption on a daily basis is uncalled for especially when there are a number of important bills waiting to be passed. The Opposition must understand the situation and act proactively. On the missing Coalgate files, there can be a specific session to debate just this issue.
