Stand on Land Bill

March 27, 2015 01:11 am | Updated November 16, 2021 01:51 pm IST

The BJP-led NDA government is in an unenviable position and on a sticky wicket as it does not have the requisite numerical strength in the Upper House and is also being confronted by a united Opposition which does not want to allow the passage of crucial Bills without a fight (“ >Centre makes it clear: no going back on legislation ,” March 26). The only option left before the government is to hold meetings with Opposition leaders, elicit their suggestions and break the impasse. On its part, the Opposition has to come up with useful suggestions that can help mitigate farmer sufferings such as greater compensation and employment to one or more family members who have lost their land holdings. There is always a way out of any problem.

Though the government has every right to pursue the ordinance route, it should not be hasty as far as the Land Bill is concerned. It must make every sincere effort possible in order to reach an amicable understanding with the Opposition and in the larger interests of the farming community as a whole. Parliament is the right platform to debate the issue. The Land Bill needs to be debated thoroughly and every aspect looked into. The government must also bear in mind that several issues like the Women’s Bill, the Anti-Corruption Bill and election reforms are long pending and that there has to be a strategy on all these as well.
