This has reference to recent reports of frauds in leading public sector banks. Corruption in PSBs has become routine. The reason is not far to seek. Before a person does anything, he does a “risk-return” analysis. He prefers to do things which involve low risks but yield high returns. In our country, corruption, especially bribe-taking, falls under this category.
Taking the law and the guardians of law for a ride is easy. The fraud may not be discovered at all; even if it is, the case will drag on. With the embezzled money, one can bribe people at all levels, buy witnesses, engage efficient lawyers… in short, manipulate the law. The guilty will go virtually scot-free after a short time in jail, where too he can manage seven-star treatment. Unless the law is severe, as in the case of Madoff in the U.S., such corruption will only increase.
