Television serials, irrespective of their language, never depict concepts. They depict conflicts. (“Regressive message at the flick of a button” and “Why demean and demonise women?” Open Page, Oct. 31). There are cases of homemakers who watch them and try to emulate the incidents and characterisation in real life. I recall a joke. A policeman asks a woman how she caught a thief. She says: “I caught him when he tried to steal the TV while I was watching a serial.”

Television serials have scenes that show characters plotting revenge while mouthing extreme dialogues. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that tele-serials contribute to the degradation of one's behaviour. Women's organisations and cultural bodies must raise their voice against soap operas that go against the established values.
