Skin matters

Indians have no moral right to protest against racism (“Pigment of our imagination,” Sept. 19). We discriminate people on the basis of their complexion. Our movies poke fun at dark-complexioned people, especially women. Let us change ourselves before criticising others.

A comparison between Indians’ beauty perception and Americans’ racist perception is not proper. A few Americans spewed venom on Nina Davuluri after she won the Miss America title not because she was unattractive but because she belonged to another race.

A dislike for dark complexion and a dislike for dark race are two different things.
