Situation in Pakistan

September 04, 2014 01:34 am | Updated 01:34 am IST

Some readers have expressed the apprehension that Pakistan may come under another spell of military rule. True, the political situation in the country is uncertain. But both the protesting leaders, Imran Khan and Tahir ul Qadri, have reiterated their commitment to democracy. Their demands lie within the ambit of the Constitution and they have not supported the idea of an Army takeover. The Army, too, has clarified that it is for democracy. Consultations are on and a positive solution is in the offing. I would like to assure our well-wishers in India that Pakistan has come a long way and there is no prospect of it descending into chaos.

Given Pakistan’s history, it is difficult to believe that the Army does not have a role in the latest developments. In a country where mistrust prevails between the elected government and the military establishment, lasting democracy is unimaginable. India also wants a peaceful and prosperous Pakistan. As the immediate neighbour, it needs to watch the situation carefully.
