Although many wanted Ram Singh, the prime accused in the Delhi gang rape case, to be awarded the death penalty, it is shocking to learn that he killed himself in the Tihar jail, one of the high-security prisons.
One wonders how he got an opportunity to hang himself.

Everyone deserves a fair trial. Unless a trial is concluded, there is no way of knowing what happened. People who jumped to conclusions and those sections of the media which blew the issue out of proportion should share the blame for the suicide of Ram Singh. Where is the justice brigade now? Will we get to see it in India Gate or will the young urban India prefer to take a politically correct stand?

The incident has exposed the negligence of prison officials.
No doubt Ram Singh was an accused in a heinous crime. But he was in state custody and thus its responsibility. The government owes an explanation to the people.

It may be interesting to recall a scene from Shakespeare’s King Richard II. Henry Bolingbroke jails King Richard and crowns himself the king. Not satisfied, Bolingbroke expresses his wish to have Richard II out of the way. But once he is murdered and Bolingbroke informed, he says “… though I did wish him dead, I hate the murderer, love him murdered.”
Although a lot of people wanted the main accused in the Delhi gang rape to be given the death penalty, they are shocked that he killed himself.
