The death of an SFI leader in Kolkata, allegedly after being beaten up by the police while in custody (April 4), has put the Trinamool Congress government in a tight spot. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has described the incident as extremely unfortunate.

It must be stated that such incidents do occur and have occurred irrespective of the party in power. What is important is strict action against the perpetrators of the heinous act.

Instead of suggesting that the student’s death was an accident, Ms Banerjee should have ordered an impartial enquiry into the incident. That would have enhanced her credibility. By her repeated apathy towards the masses, she is distancing herself from them. This does not augur well for West Bengal which voted for her thinking she would provide better governance and prosperity.
