The serial blasts at Bodh Gaya, where nine low-intensity serial blasts rocked the Maha Bodhi Temple complex and adjacent areas on Sunday, are an assault on the preachings of Lord Buddha — on kindness and tolerance. Even those engaged in direct wars usually avoid targeting such heritage institutions.

The blasts have again exposed loopholes in the security apparatus of the country.

First, a place frequented by a large number of foreigners should always be on high alert. Second, the location, where international borders are within easy reach, should make the authorities extra careful. Though Bihar has not experienced terror attacks for some time, the State is known to harbour local terror modules.

Politics has to be set aside to tackle terror with a firm hand.
