It is shocking that when the Congress is facing its most challenging general election it faces a situation where its top leaders are turning tail and fleeing. It shows that despite their vociferous claims of the party’s many achievements they lack conviction in what should normally be a moment to be proud of. One is sure to see rumblings and desertions reaching a crescendo once the Congress receives a drubbing.

The retreat started with Dr. Manmohan Singh. That was a graceful exit. The unfortunate aspect of all this is the huge loss in talent from the Congress’ brain bank. The wisdom of both Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mr. P. Chidambaram will be sorely missed. In contrast is what is happening in the BJP, where the way seniors are being weeded out is unfortunate. While it is time for the next generation to take over, a proper combination of the young and the old will augur well for the nation as running a vast democratic country like ours needs experience, wisdom, patience and calibre of a very high order. One must also ask why parties are resorting to fielding a growing number of film actors. Is the nation going on the right track?
