Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan deserves a pat for his determined efforts to get a full-house screening of My Name Is Khan in Mumbai cinemas, that too at a time when his ally and NCP supremo Sharad Pawar went to meet Bal Thackeray allegedly to ensure trouble-free IPL cricket-matches. Mr. Chavan should take long-term steps to prevent the ‘proxy-rule’ by parties such as the Shiv Sena and the MNS in Mumbai and elsewhere in Maharashtra. This can be done only by keeping under check the leaders connected with such hate-mongering parties rather than merely taking the grassroots workers into custody for a day or two.

Kudos to the Mumbaikars who came out and watched the film braving all odds. They have proved that it is public support that makes or breaks these divisive forces.

The singular denouncement by one and all of the mission of communal groups shows how to a man Mumbai stands for a united India. With this victory, the communal factions should realise that India is for peace and harmony.

It is a laudable act by Shah Rukh Khan to steadfastly adhere to his remarks favouring Pakistani cricketers. Also, the record turnout of Mumbaikars at the movie halls shows they are the “Indians” proclaimed by Sachin Tendulkar. These acts are a positive signal to the proposed peace talks between India and Pakistan, which had come to a standstill in the aftermath of 26/11.
